Covered textile bazaar, luminaires under the roof trusses

Textile warehouse market

Light along the trading aisles and in the storage zone, linear luminaires in a continuous run.

The brief

A covered warehouse and bazaar for textiles: rolls of fabric lie on the floor and on racks, and the buyer picks colour and texture right there in the aisle. It is a rare case where the warehouse task and the retail task meet in one room. The 200 lx aisle target is not enough here: fabric colour is judged vertically, and a roll deep in a rack has to read the same as the one at the front.

The second condition is a roof of steel trusses with rooflights. The suspension points are set by the structure, and by day part of the light comes from above, so in the evening the drop is felt exactly where it was brightest during the day.

The previous lighting was built from fluorescent fittings: around 110 lx, a visible difference in tint between old and new tubes, and noticeable flicker.

What we did

Continuous runs of SVO 01 Line 100W were installed along the trading rows, around 260 units at a height of ≈ 7 m. A run, rather than separate points, settles uniformity by geometry: there is no dip between luminaires in a run, and a roll deep in the rack is lit like the one at the front.

One colour temperature was used across the whole hall so that fabric does not change tint from row to row.

The outcome

Calculated illuminance is ≈ 250 lx instead of ≈ 110 lx, while the installed load fell from ≈ 47 kW to ≈ 26 kW. About 21 kW was freed, and the flicker left along with the old control gear.

Figures marked ≈ are estimates and are being confirmed against the handover record. We do not publish the name of the site until the client agrees.
