Pet Rollstation fuel station
Lighting for the canopy and the forecourt: IP65 on the columns, IP54 under the canopy, operation in the heat.
The brief
The Pet Rollstation fuel station: a canopy with dispensers, a forecourt with driveways, and a shop. Three zones with three different targets on one site. Under the canopy 150 lx is needed on the surface, because that is where people read the display and pay. On the forecourt 20 lx is enough, but with the uniformity that lets a driver entering the site see the markings.
The classic mistake on a fuel station is a brightly lit canopy against a dark background. The step is so large that the driver sees nothing beyond the pool of light and the forecourt turns black. So the scheme was calculated for the whole site rather than for the canopy alone.
Heat is a factor of its own. The canopy warms up all day, and the luminaire under it works at the hardest point on the site.
What we did
Around 24 linear SVO 01 Line 50W units run under the canopy at ≈ 5 m: a run gives an even field of light over the dispensers without glare sources in the field of view of the person refuelling. The forecourt and the entrance are covered by around 12 bracket-mounted SKU 01 Classic 100W units on columns, in an IP65 outdoor housing. Under the canopy is a sheltered zone, so the Line housing is IP54: on this site IP65 is carried by the outdoor Classic units, not by the luminaires above the dispensers.
The level on the forecourt was raised just enough to remove the step between the canopy and the driveway, not to flood the whole site with light.
The outcome
The installed load is ≈ 2.4 kW against ≈ 5 kW on the previous lighting: about 2.6 kW was freed. The brightness step between the canopy and the forecourt stopped dazzling drivers at the entrance.
The total amount of light did not grow: 18 HPS 250 W lamps are ≈ 504,000 lm of nominal lamp flux, the new set is ≈ 324,000 lm by the IES files. The ≈ 170 lx against ≈ 80 lx in the facts card rests not on the number of lumens but on where they are aimed, and on nominal lamp flux and the output of a housing at the end of its life being different quantities. We have no illuminance measurements from a handover record.
